  • An Incredible event occurred January 15th at the Open Mic at Goodfellas in Hampton. Attendance , somewhere around 120 or so, with a very high percentage of local musicians of which many got a chance to perform. Some of those performing included DON BUTCHER, VAUGHN DEEL, SUEANNE DOYER, RAY BRUCE, RICHARD CHILDRESS, WALT REDMOND, SR, LLOYD BINGER, JAN LINDEMAN, LEE BOYD, MIKE STEPHANSKY, KEN HEITKEMPER, NATE PACE, MICHAEL RAY, MARK WAMPLER, BILL WAMPLER. The festive atmosphere and some really great music, resulted one great musical event. Open Mic continues at Goodfellas each Tuesday. DON BUTCHER on guitar, with SUEANNE DOYER on bass, and JIMMY SCHWARTZ on drums kicked it off. Later on, a highlight of the evening was a performance by bluegrass band, HARD KNOX that picked up the pace with some old standards and some newer music that was enjoyed by all. Familiar performers in the Hard Knox Band included BOB BURROWS, CHRIS ROSE and JOE EPPS, who are regulars at Johnny Knox's Traditonal Bluegrass show each month in Carrollton VA on the 2nd saturday night. Also performing at DD Corral was DANA NICKERSON who performed a few acoustic selections and rock band BAND X who had a good blend of songs that had a great sound.

Wynona WYNONA JUDD CONCERT IN KENTUCKY

  • MEONA reporter, Brenda Salyers from Ashland Kentucky reports:
I went to see WYNONA at the Paramount in Ashland Saturday night. It was the grand reopening of the Paramount after a 8 million dollar refurbishment. It only has 1400 seats, so it was a fantastic concert to see up close. NAOMI JUDD came out towards the end and did a set with Wynona. ASHLEY JUDD came out on stage, also, it was something to see. At the first encore, she and her three back-up singers sang "How Great Thou Art" to close out the 2-1/2 hour performance. Wynona laughed, joked, talked about being "home", and cried and got choked up when she sang "Tell me 'bout the good ole days". She had talked about driving passed her grandpa's house earlier in the day for the first time since he died, . It was an outstanding concert.

Lynda Smith Donks 1/19/2002Steve Keith Donks 1/19/2002 GREAT FIRST 2002 SHOW AT DONK'S THEATER

  • Opening of the 2002 concert season at DONKS THEATER in Mathews Virginia got off to a great start with their "Virginia's Li'l Ole Opry" show January 19th. Performing in the first part of the show, backed up by house band, SHADES OF COUNTRY were many of the Opry regulars, including : UNCLE JIMMY WICKHAM, LYNDA SMITH, C J OWENS, STEVE MOTLEY, MIKE ROBBINS, RALPH MOTLEY, TRACIE HILL, BETSY RIPLEY, DEANA MULLINS, BETTY MULLINS, MICHELLE WALKER. SHADES OF COUNTRY has a very wide range of musical capabilities, whether it is a traditional, or a new country song, or some great Skynyrd southern rock, or some Delbert McClinton blues.
The second part of the show also included SHADES OF COUNTRY backing up headliner STEVE KEITH and his wife LAURIE as back up singer. Steve is a great performer, whether it is banjo, fiddle, guitar or singing. Many of his songs are about being near the water, and he sails and performs the east coast living in Annapols, MD and Deltaville, VA. Two songs that I thought were memorable were "Blackbeard" and "If I Had Buffet's Band". Each song shows the versatility of his music from a ballad to a comedy parody.
