  • The MEONA FEST 2002 Road Trips were limited this week to the local area. Volunteer Acoustic Jam Band 1/7/2002Nate Pace 1/7/2002
  • VOLUNTEER ACOUSTIC JAM that occurs at the BOULEVARD Restaurant in Newport News early on Monday nights has been gaining in momentum in recent weeks. The group led by ERIC HANSON of Hampton started out a few months ago jamming on outside patio's at a few locations during the summer and have now have establkished themselves at this indoor venue with ever increasing participants and audience as this group evolves. Music has a full range diversity of folk, classic rock, country, rock, and original music. This past Monday, legendary entertainer NATE PACE introduced one of his new creations that had a favorable response from those attending. He is one of the few local artists that has the ability to yodel as he performs some of the Jimmy Rodgers and Hank Williams , Sr songs from the past. Also others performing included BOB SIMPSON, JAN LINDEMAN, KEVIN IRISH, SHAWN IRISH, MIKE SHEARER, BOB PUSATERI and others. .

Bill Morris, Sueanne Doyer, Vaughn Deel at Rooney's 1/7/2002 ROONEY'S OPEN MIC CONTINUES IN 2002

  • The open mic event at ROONEY'S on Big Bethel Road in Hampton kicked off the new year Monday January 7th with a fairly slow start. Great performances were provided by DON BUTCHER, SUEANNE DOYER, VAUGHN DEEL, BILL MORRIS, JOE STEPHENSON plus others. After a setback in September for Monday night football, it was decided to re establish this event. The re-start has been slow but growing each week as more musicians realize that it is a great place to perform a few songs or jam with the regulars. This event hosted by DON BUTCHER provides a good base from which to launch some good music, starting around 9pm each Monday.

Jim Canody at Goodfellas 1/8/2002Shelli Saucier at Goodfellas 1/8/2002 FIRST 2002 OPEN MIC AT GOODFELLAS

  • If it is 9pm Tuesday in Hampton, it must be GOODFELLAS open mic. This event is well established in downtown Hampton for the past several years. This event also hosted by DON BUTCHER got off to a great start in 2002 on January 8th. Some of the Musicians who performed also included JIM CANODY, SUEANNE DOYER, VAUGHN DEEL, NATE PACE, SHELLI SAUCIER, JEFF DAVIS, LEE BOYD, LLOYD BINGER . plus many others. Don usually refers to the regulars as the Tuesday Night Choir duing some of the many jams. The music here is as diverse as the crowd. You never know what you will hear at this event as there are pleasant surprises musically each week.

Bob Elliott & Don Butcher at DD Corral 1/10/2002 D D CORRAL LAUNCHES OPEN MIC JANUARY 10th

  • Don Butcher reports the following:
We had a great time opening up the stage at DD's Corral in Newport News last night. The open Mic team of Don Butcher (me), SuAnne Doyer on Bass and vocals and Jim Swartz on Drums and vocals laid down the foundation for some really fantastic music.
Joe Maniscalco of TwoCan Jam Band sat in with his pan steel drum, flute and trumpet adding to Frankie's trumpet.........I mean to tell you, it was great.
Jim Canody joined on guitar and vocals. Then the rest of the Island Knights band joined Jim and played a really upbeat set of tune while the folks at DD's hit the dance floor. Island Knights consist of Mac MacNamara, Bob Elliott and Jim Canody
Bob Burrows had to watch "Survivor" first, but later joined us and played some really great sing-a-longs and the harmonies were once again stellar!!
I'm sure that this open mic will be a huge success and a place (a big place) to join in on the fun & festivities of playing music with some wonderful people.
Steven Sloop (MEONA) of course was on hand with his camera so there will be some photos.

Donnie Mason & In The Tradition at Johnny Knox's 1/12/2002 GREAT SATURDAY NIGHT AT JOHNNY KNOX'S

  • It was standing room only at Johnny Knox's Body Shop in Carrollton VA Saturday January 12th for the TRADITIONAL BLUEGRASS MUSIC JAMBOREE held there the 2nd Saturday of each month 7 - 11pm.
It was estimated that over 300 people attended to hear some really great Bluegrass music. Performers included DONNIE MASON & IN THE TRADITION featuring CHRIS HART on the Dobro from Lynchburg VA, HEAVENWARD BOUND and SOUTHERN BRANCH from the local area. One feature at this event is the incredibly great jam sessions that occur in the offices in the front of the building away from the crowds. This is the real thing, not open mic, but no mic.
